Travel Pro Interview Series: Ryan & Samantha

We fell in love writing letters to each other from across the world, and now we're exploring it side-by-side.

Q: How do you find cheap flights? Do you have a trick or favorite site?

R & S: Finding cheap flights is an art form haha. It requires tons of patience and you have to be flexible. I’ve never said, “I want to go here on these dates.” and then found the perfect flight. We keep a mental list of our favorite places and then keep our eyes open for cheap flights, once we find some dates that should work we book and make the rest of our schedule fit around the new trip. We used to live in Utah and loved @flightsfromhome to find tickets. Once you find tickets, don’t be afraid to book, most if not all airlines give you 24 hours to cancel.

Q: What’s been your biggest challenge travelling as a couple?

R & S: Traveling as a couple is also an art form haha. In the beginning it was always important for us to manage expectations. If one of us wanted to cliff jump and explore while the other wanted to relax on the beach, one of us would end up bummed if we didn’t communicate with each other. But we’ve got this down now.

Q: What’s the greatest thing about traveling as a couple?

R & S: Planning together is so much fun. No matter what goes on in or day, we have a common purpose and mission to plan our next adventure. Working together on @ourtravelpassport let’s us spend a lot of time together and it’s really enjoyable.

Q: Your top tips for couples to planning an extended trip together?

R & S: Our top tip for couples to plan extended trips with one another are to again manage expectations. Always talk about what each of you wants to get out of the trip and make sure each person gets to knock off some of their top “must-do’s.” If one person plans the trip the way they want to do it without taking the other persons desires into consideration, you’re going to have a bad trip. But again, this is different for every couple.

Q: How did you know you could travel without killing each other?

R & S: I guess we didn’t know that we wouldn’t kill each other until the first time we travelled. Our honeymoon went well haha, so we said let’s try and travel again, and it worked out. If you aren’t good at communicating, traveling is going to be tough. But at the same time, if you go in with the right attitude, it’s an incredible way to grow closer to each other and overcome other communication struggles.

Q: How many countries have you traveled in so far? What countries are next on your list?

R & S: Sam has been to 26 countries and Ryan has been to 30. Most of those have been together, but not all of them. We really want to go to Bali and the Faroe Islands.

Q: Where would you go if you could fly anywhere in the world right now? What would you do there?

R & S: At the top of the list, is Tonga to swim with whales. If we could go anywhere right now, that’s what we would do. Or go diving with Mantas in Indonesia or French Polynesia. We like the water!
